Your Guide to Writing the Perfect Wedding Vows.

Wedding vows are a meaningful part of every wedding ceremony. The moment in which the couple expresses their love, makes promises and commits to one another for the rest of their lives. It is an extremely intense and emotional moment for not only the couple, but the audience too!

We’ve all been to weddings and heard the traditional vows of promising to be there for one another in sickness and in health, but recently couples decided to forgo the traditional vows and write some of their own.

If you are staring at a blank paper or googling ideas, we have you covered! The outline below is the perfect guide to writing beautiful vows.

1. Start with a strong statement about who this person is to you.

Your soulmate, your best friend, your partner in crime, your rock, etc.

2. State the things you love about your partner.

It can be physical features such as their laugh or smile. It can be personality traits such as their patience, sense of humor or kind gestures. If you still need inspiration, answer the following questions. What about this person has led you to forever? What made you fall in love with this person? What do you miss most when you’re apart? You only need a few qualities. If you list them all, you will miss your reception!

3. Tell a love story.

This is a great moment to bring up how you met, your first date, or when you knew you were falling in love. It will bring you back to that special moment that led you to forever and give the audience insight into your love for one another. If you are looking to add humor, this is a good place to tie it in. Maybe there’s a funny story about an embarrassing moment on your first date or how you met at a Jersey Shore night club and danced the night away.

4. Make your promises.

Be clear and specific when making promises to your partner and vow to stick to them. Use phrases like “I promise”, “I vow” and “I pledge.” Include some serious, romantic vows such as “I vow to always support you” or “I promise to love you and stick by your side through everything.” Then add in some personalized ones that are specific to your relationship. It could be “I promise to kill every bug that we find in the house”, “I promise to never steal the covers, unless you’re hogging them” or “I promise to only make you watch The Bachelor once a week.”

5. Consider the future and mention specific things the two of you will do together.

Use phrases like “With you”, “I will” or “together.” Think about what you’re looking forward to in the married life or special things you want to share with your person. Consider your goals and aspirations such as raising a family or moving into a home together. Also mention things about your current relationship that you vow to do forever. Weekly date nights? 3am dance parties in the kitchen? Cook dinner together? Share an ice cream sundae at your favorite ice cream shop? Cherish these special moments and give the audience an intimate look at your favorite things to do as a couple.

6. Reassure your partner.

Don’t forget to add that you will be there when times get tough. When work is challenging, when they are sick, hurt or simply just having a bad day. Remember this is for better or for worse, in sickness and in health.

7. End your vows with one last promise.

The promise of forever and until death do us part. “As long as we both shall live.”
